Frequently asked questions:

Do you travel to student’s homes, or do I come to you? What about remote lessons?

I do not travel to student’s homes. I teach from my home studio, and I do not teach virtual lessons.

What age do you recommend starting a young beginner with viola?

This varies student to student. In general, I am hesitant to teach students under the age of five.

What size viola should I get?

For adolescents, getting fitted at a music store is helpful to properly identify what size will work best. I always recommend rental instruments at the beginning, since kids grow out of their instruments quickly!

What length of lesson should I sign up for?

Beginners: 30 minutes (Although for beginner adults, 60 min lessons work fine!)

Intermediate learners: 45-60 minutes

Advanced Students: 60 minutes

How much money should I spend on an instrument?

This is entirely up to you. I am happy to give recommendations when a student would like to upgrade their instrument. In general, I recommend beginners start with student-grade instruments. Rentals are a smart choice for kids who will grow out of their instrument every few years.

How often should I have lessons?

Once per week.

What materials do I need?

Required books/ repertoire will be discussed individually with the student based on their playing level.
All students need:

Rosin, cleaning cloth, shoulder rest, tuner, pencil, and metronome. (Tuner and metronome can be downloaded as apps.)

How long will it take for me to become an advanced player?

Totally up to the student. Efficient practice leads to great success. I work hard to ensure that my students learn how to practice and solve problems.

Do you teach both violin and viola?

Currently I am accepting new viola students only.
